Commonwealth Youth Summit

 

#CYS2017

From November 3-5 2017, the Commonwealth Youth Council in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Government of Malaysia organized the Commonwealth Youth Summit: An Intergenerational Convergence. Recognizing that the voices of young people are key to solving the world’s most pressing issues, the Commonwealth Youth Summit brought together over 200 young leaders from 52 countries to discuss and exchange experiences, foster learning, inspire and expand their capacity. CYS2017 saw panel discussions and breakout sessions involving top leaders in the respective thematic pillars.

Key topics of focus were: Climate Policy and Finance, Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, Peacebuilding & Global Inequality and Social Cohesion.

Dr. Josephine Ojiambo, Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General

Khairy Jamaluddin, Minister of Youth and Sports, Malaysia

Stefan Priesner, UNDP Resident Representative for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam

Datuk Vinod Sekhar, President and Group Chief Executive of the Petra Group

Datin Paduka Mother A Mangalam, President of the Pure Life Society Malaysia

Highlights of CYS2017 included:

HRH in discussion with delegates about cyber-security and the challenges faced in their countries.

Commonwealth Conversations with HRH Prince Charles Philip Arthur George, Prince of Wales.

His Royal Highness, Dr. Josephine, and Mr. Khairy Jamaluddin (Minister of Youth & Sports Malaysia) interacted with delegates of the CYS2017 to discuss pressing issues that affect youth such as peacebuilding and cyber-security, methods of solving these matters and how youth can play role in building a more peaceful world.

Keynote by Datin Paduka Mother A. Mangalam on the role of youth in building a more peaceful world.

Her keynote answered the following key questions:

  1. Should youth continue following their dreams or follow the norm?
  2. How does one find a deeper sense of purpose in this world? 
  3. Is the impact of one individual enough to make a ripple in the world?
