The CYC caught up with The Greens this week:

Q: SDG12 is central to the work of the Greens, why do you think sustainable consumption and production is so important to focus on?

A: We are working to achieve sustainable production and consumption because of increase in population which has an adverse effect on the world’s biodiversity and fostered food insecurity. The quest for fertile lands for agriculture and forests for pasture by the world’s growing population as well as urbanization are driving species to extinction and accelerating climate change: These have triggered price hikes in our food industry and greatly accelerated food insecurity, malnutrition and hunger locally and internationally. Cameroon used to be a land of plenty but all that has changed. As such we are working to achieve sustainable production and consumption by promoting forest-friendly and climate-smart agriculture in a bid to guarantee food security, improve good health from nutrition and curb biodiversity loss.

Green Schools (2)

Q: We have heard some of the stories, tell us what you have been up to?

A: We are currently training communities on Agroforestry and empowering them with agroforestry seeds to practice agroforestry as well as on Community Tree Nursery Design, Construction and Management. We are planting lots of Trees for Food, Trees For Water, Trees for Medicine, Trees for shade (Climate Change) and Trees for beauty in the Bamenda Highlands of the North West Region of Cameroon.

Since 2010, we have been educating, empowering and engaging young people in schools and communities via our Green Schools Project to achieve sustainable production and consumption. Green Schools creates environ-agricultural and health clubs in schools known as Green Clubs that engage agriculture, school greening, waste management and health activities in schools. We have been actively sensitizing and educating the communities of the Bamenda Highlands of the North West Region about sustainable consumption and production via our 1hour weekly environmental radio program known Green Radio as well as during international events such as World Food Day, World Environment Day, Earth Day, etc.

In September 2016, we shall be launching our “Agribusiness for Schools Project” with slogan “nurturing a generation of Agripreneurs”

The project aims at educating students on agriculture as a business and organic farming; hence nurturing a generation Agripreneurs and the project’s principal goal is to educate, empower and engage students to organically cultivate food/cash crops such as maize, water melon, cassava, etc. in their school farms for sale (business) as a means to raise funds to purchase books for their school library, carry out student-development works as well as register the underprivileged and orphan students for the end of year exams (General Certificate of Education (G.C.E). Through this project, the students gain hands on experience in become Agripreneurs.

In October 2016, We shall be launching our “Green Health for All Project” with slogan “growing good health on herbs”. The project is aimed at educating students in schools as well as orphans and vulnerable children in orphanages about local herbs and their uses (Naturopathy) and empowers them to create Herbal Clubs and Herbal Gardens for their schools and orphanages as a means to help improve on their health and environment as well as general living standards.

Q: In two years time what do you hope to achieve?

A: We want to achieve the following in two years;

– Train and empower 1000 Farmers to commence agroforestry

– Train and empower 20 Communities to establish Community Tree Nurseries

– Train and engage more 20 Schools in our Agribusiness for Schools Project

– Train and engage more than 20 Schools, Communities and Orphanages in our Green Health for All Project

– – Expand our Green Radio Program to other radio stations of the North West Region

– Establish School and Community Orchards as well as plant 1000000 Trees in the Bamenda Highlands of the North West Region
